Recently, General Motors (GM) has entered into a partnership with battery recycling enterprise Redwood Materials, providing it with both new and used power batteries. Redwood Materials will then repurpose these batteries for energy storage systems. Previously, GM's power batteries had been successfully applied in Redwood's 12MW/63MWh microgrid project at its headquarters in Sparks, Nevada, powering a nearby data center with 2,000 GPUs. In June this year, Redwood established a new energy storage division focused on the secondary use of EV power batteries in grid-side energy storage systems. Through testing, Redwood discovered that many power batteries entering battery recycling centers still had a considerable remaining lifespan. Redwood's second-life application approach utilizes the original battery packs, connecting them to form energy storage systems, without individually recycling battery materials.
